Saikou signs! Forward arrives on loan

Our fourth January signing

24 January 2023

We are pleased to announce the signing of Cambridge United forward Saikou Janneh on loan until the end of the season.

Comfortable playing on either wing or down the middle, the Gambian attacker has featured 17 times and scored once for the U’s this season after originally moving to the Abbey from Bristol City last summer.

Born in Gunjur, Gambia, Saikou moved to England at the age of 13 before beginning his football career with Bath City, in conjunction with studying at a local college.

Watch our big reveal below.

In turn, this led to spells with Western League Premier Division sides Cadbury Heath and Clevedon Town, leading to a trial with Bristol City.

The 23-year-old was handed two opportunities to impress the Robins in 2018 before he was integrated into their academy system. He would go on to make six appearances at first-team level, scoring twice in the EFL Cup.

Loan spells with Torquay United, Newport County and most recently Shrewsbury Town helped to build up his first-team experience before he completed a permanent transfer away from Ashton Gate.

The addition of Saikou adds to our previous signings of Sam Pearson, Armani Little and Ali Al-Hamadi – providing further depth in a key area of the pitch.

Johnnie Jackson said:

“Saikou is an exciting forward player who can play on both wings and through the centre. He’s different to what we’ve got already because he brings electric pace which allows the team to get up the pitch quickly.

“He takes players on, is aggressive, and gets in behind – which will help us to put the opposition on the back foot.”
