Omar in the building! Striker signs

2023/24 squad taking shape

The Dons’ attacking options have been bolstered by the signing of striker Omar Bugiel.

Set to become a free agent at the end of June, Omar will officially become a Wimbledon player on July 1, having brought his four-year spell with Sutton United to a close.

A towering presence in the final third, the German-born Lebanese international played a part in over 150 games for the Gander Green Lane outfit, quickly become a fans’ favourite.

PIC: Omar got to meet some of our fans at this afternoon's training ground clean up day in New Malden.

Born in Berlin, Omar started out in 1860 Munich’s youth section before being released in 2009. This saw him take a life-changing step in his fledgling career as he moved to England aged 16, with the aim of learning English.

After enrolling in college he was taken in by Chichester City, this then led to further spells in non-league with Selsey and Burgess Hill Town. It was at Worthing where he would get the most notice however, as he notched up over 50 goals in 103 league games – inevitably attracting interest from on high.

He joined Forest Green Rovers in early 2017, before going on to play a role in their promotion to the Football League. He also spent time on loan at Bromley before making the move permanent in the summer of 2018.

Further good form for the latter saw Sutton swoop in for his services in 2019, with the striker going on to enjoy a success-laden spell that included winning the National League and finishing as runners-up in the EFL Trophy.

Now Omar is relishing his next challenge after signing a one-year contract with the Dons: “I’m very excited and ready to go. The talks I had with the gaffer, combined with the plans the Club has and the stadium made it really straightforward.

“I like to think I’m a selfless, hardworking forward. I can do the dirty work by winning the ball up in the air, I can drop deep and get others involved – I can even help out the team defensively. The fans will see that I’ll give my best every game because I’m an honest player.”

Speaking after completing our move for the striker, Johnnie Jackson said: “I’m absolutely buzzing to have signed Omar. He gives us a physical presence in the forward areas. He’s a target man that can also drop in as a number 10 when required.

“We saw first hand last season how good he can be when he faced us. He was excellent and caused us a lot of problems. He’s going to complement the options we have really well – he’s robust and has played a lot of games to date.”
