Schedule confirmed for 3-day celebration of our history

Iconic play will showcase the reformation of AFC Wimbledon

16 June 2023

It’s only a week now until a big celebration of our unique history – and Dons supporters are welcome to join us for an exciting weekend of activities.

A Fans Club, Birth of a Phoenix, tells the story of how Dons supporters refused to let their club die, and the play, rewritten by Matthew Couper from the original 2004 production, will feature on all three days.

It all gets underway a week today and the full schedule of events, brought to you by WiSH (Wimbledon in Sporting History) is below:

Friday 23 June

  • 7.45 pm - A Fans Club, Birth of a Phoenix

Saturday 24 June

  • 2 pm - An opportunity to visit revamped club reception to view five new club honours boards.
  • 2 pm - 6 pm - Launch of 'Womble Till I Die' book - chronicling our history from 1889.
  • 3 pm - Unveiling of 'The Greatest Team' artwork.
  • 3.30 pm - Guest speaker for audio visual history of sports on Wimbledon Common.
  • 5 pm - Guest speaker for audio visual history of sports along the River Wandle.
  • 7 pm - Live music, including old and new Wimbledon songs.

Sunday 25 June

  • 3 pm - Matinee for A Fans Club, Birth of a Phoenix
  • 7.45 pm - Final performance of A Fans Club, Birth of a Phoenix

Matthew Couper said: “I’ve re-written it a bit with some of the speeches and important things that were said. I’m telling it through the eyes of a couple of fans: there’s the initial announcement of the move, before the protests, and how we all fought for it not to happen, followed by what happened afterwards before the first match at Sutton. It’s crazy what we achieved in those years and how far we’ve progressed as a club since then."

Tickets are priced at £20 (including booking fee) with the play featuring four times over the weekend.
