Johnnie: We were way off it

Reaction to today’s defeat

18 March 2023

Johnnie Jackson conceded that our side were way off the levels expected as the Dons fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Crawley Town.

An early goal from Ashley Nadesan proved decisive as Wimbledon failed to test the visiting keeper over the course of the 90 minutes on a day of frustration.

As a result there was understandable discontent from the home faithful – something that our manager felt was warranted.

“I understand their reaction and the boys should do,” said Johnnie. “In this tough run we’ve had, I’ve often spoken about performance levels and about how we haven’t been getting what we’ve deserved but we can’t say that today. We got what we deserved, the performance levels were way below what we expect.

“We looked off it today, that’s the most concerning thing. We need to look deep for the reasons why that is in order to understand why we weren’t up to scratch. We had control of the ball but we didn’t get it into the areas that we needed to. Even when we got into those positions, we weren’t brave enough, we didn’t take our opportunities to shoot.

“It has to come from within. The leaders and the experienced players in the team have to step up. You have to be brave to play football at this level. All the stuff that we talk about everyday at the training ground is what I expect and what I require. These boys have got to show that they want to be part of what we want to create as a football club. We need more from everyone, myself included.”
