Launch of Women’s Football Academy

A path to first team football and beyond

24 March 2023

AFC Wimbledon Women have teamed up with HRUC (Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge Colleges) to offer a platform for aspiring footballers to shine.

The launch of the Women’s Football Academy will provide an opportunity for students to develop their football skills, at the same time as they study towards their BTEC or A level qualifications.

AFC Wimbledon Women’s General Manager Sophia Axelsson, who was part of a panel when 80 current students visited the Cherry Red Records Stadium recently, said: "We are all about development at AFC Wimbledon Women. Not just on the pitch, but off the pitch too. By partnering with HRUC, we can take this a step further – jointly providing a platform for young minds to develop future careers and a path towards first-team football."

Sijul Miah, Head of School of Business and Industries at Richmond upon Thames College, said: “I am delighted to be working with AFC Wimbledon Women's team and General Manager, Sophia Axelsson, to launch the Women's Football Academy to develop this partnership, bringing new opportunities for our students.

"Our partnership is designed to give students access to industry leading training and education, tailored to individual needs with clear sights of career progression and development. We aim to nurture and develop students into professional athletes of the future.”
