Dons on Tour! Pre-season trip to Spain

Alicante visit to start summer schedule for Wimbledon

15 May 2023

With the Club seeking warm weather training to prepare our first-team for next season, we’re delighted to announce plans for a trip to Spain.

Yes, the Dons will be heading to northern Alicante, for a six-day tour in early July - and there will be plenty of incentives to travel to this province in eastern Spain.

That’s because we’ll be facing EFL opposition in our first friendly of the summer and hosting something that we hope will really whet the appetite for pre-season – an informal event that offers fans an opportunity to meet the squad and football management.

Craig Cope, Head of Football Operations, said: “We are looking forward to heading out to Spain for a pre-season trip that will offer excellent preparations for 2023/24.

“Following extensive research, we have selected a purpose-built centre and complex, which offers all the amenities needed to have a vigorous and intensive training schedule.

“I would like to place on record my thanks to the Club for their support on this. We are all aware of the demands of pre-season, so we are grateful to have the opportunity to do our work in a different environment together, which will also encourage the new squad to bond.

“Feedback from fans suggested a desire for a pre-season tour, so I hope that supporters will be pleased with the location and our plans for when we are out there. We are looking at ways for fans making the trip to come and meet the squad with more details to come soon. If possible, I’d encourage fans able to travel to attend both the game and event, which will offer a bit of insight from the first-team management ahead of next season and a chance to meet the players.

“There will also be an opportunity for supporters unable to travel to meet the squad in pre-season upon our return.”

The date of this tour, along with our friendly opponents and venue, will be confirmed as soon as possible, so keep an eye on our official website for more details.

We advise fans not to book flights/accommodation until the fixture is confirmed and at that stage we’ll also be able to confirm the venue and date for the evening event with the first-team.

We’re proud to receive support for this tour from Omnia Group Services, who provide specialist outsourced payroll and compliance services for both temporary and permanent workforces.

Our Managing Director Danny Macklin said: “As Craig says, this is a vital part of our pre-season preparation. We would therefore like to thank the team at Omnia for their support as a Club Partner in helping to fund the trip and I hope many fans will be able to join us out in Spain.”
