Johnnie aims to maintain unbeaten away form

Previewing another long away trip for us on Saturday

27 October 2023

Johnnie Jackson is contemplating changes to the line-up, as we move on from Tuesday’s result with another long-distance trip this weekend.

The 4-2 defeat at home to Accrington Stanley was “put to bed quickly” at the training ground and the focus is very much on maintaining our impressive unbeaten away run this season, at Morecambe on Saturday.

“We’ll make some tough decisions," said Johnnie. "Obviously, off the back of certain results we look at things and different ways of going about the task ahead.

“We have to look at what’s available to us and how we came out of the other night. Who do we feel is going to be best suited to start the game at Morecambe? Not only that, but the five from seven substitutes that are going to help us get the result we need.”

You can listen to the full interview with Johnnie, and a summary of the key points is also below.

As manager, how did you deal with going back into the dressing room on Tuesday night and then regrouping back at the training ground the next day?

We had to put it to bed really quickly with another game coming up. We looked at the previous night and it was spoken about in honest terms - what we needed to do better.

The players engaged in that and they recognised that we didn’t do the things in those first 45 minutes that had brought us success for large parts of the season. We came away from our levels, we came away from what we had been doing well - for whatever reason - and we threw in a bad first-half.

We responded brilliantly in the second half and on another night we might have got something. The response in the second-half gave us the belief that the first-half was an anomaly. I told the lads that the good thing is having another game soon.

I told them, 'before you know it, we’re going to be on the train going to Morecambe and you’ve got the opportunity to put it right as soon as possible'. That’s the beauty of football - sometimes you have no time to dwell. We’ve addressed it and they’re desperate to get back out there.

Tomorrow’s opponents are just outside the play-off places and they've only lost three times themselves in the league this season under Derek Adams, so are you expecting a difficult challenge?

Yes, Morecambe are a tough side and it’s a tough place to go - back in the North West. We’ve had a few long journeys already and more to come.

They’re on a decent run of form, but our away form has been really strong. We’ve got lads who are desperate to play, to put things right, and are also in a positive frame of mind when it comes to attacking these away games.

We'll go up there full confidence that we can go and get a result, knowing – as always – we’re up against opposition that can cause us problems. However, we can do that ourselves, as we’ve shown time and time again.

You’ve got plenty of options to choose from, as just Lee Brown is absent?

Yes. Lee is struggling with his back a bit. He is due to have some work done on that today, so hopefully we’ll have him back before too long. Unfortunately, he’s going to miss out on this trip.
