Striker returns, but a defender remains ruled out

24 October 2023

Josh Davison comes back into the squad for tonight’s match at home to Accrington Stanley, but we’ll still be without Lee Brown.

Davison missed Saturday’s goalless draw at Barrow, as the striker had to return to London for personal reasons. Brown remains ruled out, as the defender recovers from a back injury.

“Josh is fit and available for the game,” said Assistant Manager Terry Skiverton after Monday’s final  training session in New Malden. “It was one of those things as he had to shoot home. For us, it was good to have him back in today.

“Browny is not close to coming back. We’re monitoring him and hopefully he should be ready to return to the grass maybe in a week or two.”

You can see the full interview with Terry below.

We’ve had some great battles with Accrington Stanley over the years, and this time it's eighth in the table at home to seventh. What do you envisage this time?

It’s important because of how close we are in the league. John Coleman and his assistant Jimmy Bell have done a fantastic job over the years there. Accrington have always had a good, fighting spirit about them, play good football and are well organised.

For us, it’s a tough game, but we’re on a decent trajectory, we’re playing well, and the performances are good. We’re focusing on maintaining these standards. We want to keep a clean sheet at home, score goals and give our supporters something to get behind. It's important for us to put in a good performance to try and get all three points.

Is everyone else okay since Saturday?

Yes, as we didn't really pick-up any injuries at the weekend. Apart from Browny, we go into tonight with a fully fit squad. Connor Evans trained again and he’s getting closer. We didn’t really pick up any injuries at the weekend, so apart from Browny we go into it with a fully fit squad.

Paul Kalambayi has been showing how strong and fit he is. He’s been really looking after himself. Huseyin Biler is champing at the bit! He’s ready and on Saturday we could have brought him on at either right back or left back, so for us we’ve got really good options within the squad at the moment.

How important is it for you to go and see those players out on loan too?

It’s really important that we get our eyes on them as well. Locally we are, but it’s a little bit different when it comes to north of the border and getting up to Scotland to watch games.

We are watching clips and highlights of what everybody is doing though, out on loan, and we like to try and get down and get our own eyes on them. We will try and get out and about and see everybody.

We’ve got the FA Youth Cup (at home to Cambridge United) coming up soon and we’ll cast our eyes on our own young talent, so it’s not just training and go home - there’s a lot to it that people may not realise. We are watching.

We heard the sad news of the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton during Saturday’s game at Barrow - I just wanted to get your thoughts.

He transcended the world of football. I was very fortunate to meet him when I was at Yeovil Town. Manchester United came down to play us in the FA Cup and people perhaps didn’t know about the standards that he upheld at that club.

He used to travel to every away game and when the players turned up they would all be dressed in their suits. In the changing room, everyone shook Sir Bobby’s hand. For us, it was like - Wow!

He’s always been a figurehead that’s showed courage, commitment and a humble person that got on with representing his club in the most wonderful way.
