Trio in contention for trip to Barrow

Squad strengthened for away game

19 October 2023

Ryan Johnson, Harry Pell, and Connor Evans could all come into contention for Saturday’s League Two trip to Barrow.

Manager Johnnie Jackson was given a triple boost at training yesterday in New Malden, as all three took an active part in the session.

“We’ll make a late call,” said Johnnie. “They missed last week and a bulk of training and even more so with regards to Connor, but I’ll look at them on Friday and see how they come through that and make decisions then.

“I was disappointed for Ryan Johnson to miss out against Bradford. It was just an issue with his neck that meant that he couldn’t play that game, but he’s recovered well, trained and come through that fine. Ryan comes back into our thoughts for the weekend and it’s good to have him.

“Harry Pell just had a little niggle and couldn’t make it at the back end of last week, but again – nothing too serious. We’ve had him back with the group and there’s been some really good work from both.

“Connor is a talented boy, we did a lot of work on getting him on the ball, along with all of our attacking players, so that we give them that license to create and score. That's what he can bring to the team. We've missed that since he’s been injured, because he did so well in the win at Walsall when he scored.

“We were gutted that he came out of that with the injury and he has missed a little period of time now, but he’s stepped up his rehab and it was great to have him back out there amongst it and working with the main group.”

Goalkeeper Nik Tzanev and striker Ali Al-Hamadi are also due to return to the group after gaining further international experience for their countries.

“I’m really pleased for them,” said Johnnie. “Nik played the first game for New Zealand out in Spain against DR Congo and did well. We saw his clips. He didn’t figure against Australia over at Brentford’s ground, which we were planning to see, but he did get 90 minutes out in Spain under his belt.

“Ali played and scored against Jordan, which was great for him. I’ve touched base and congratulated him on his goal and it’ll be good to get him back in later on in the week.

“There’re a few players walking that disciplinary tightrope now, in terms of yellow cards, and we’ve still got a number of games to get through until that changes.

“The lads have to play their normal game. They have to tackle; they have to block and they have to run - sometimes with that comes yellow cards. What we don’t want is any stupid ones, like dissent or kicking the ball away – things like that. We don’t want to lose anyone, but you can limit the reasons why you get them.”
