Charlie secured! Midfielder signs on loan

Our 11th summer signing

1 September 2023

The Dons have beaten the deadline today to complete the loan signing of Burton Albion midfielder Charlie Lakin, with the 24-year-old arriving on a deal until January.

Boasting a career record of over 100 games – coming largely across the Football League - Charlie provides us with another option in a key area of the pitch as fixtures continue to come thick and fast.

Born in Solihull, the left-footed central midfielder began his youth career with Walsall before making a move as a nine year-old to Birmingham City’s academy.

It was with the Blues that he honed his skills, progressing through the ranks before turning professional in May 2017. He was handed his senior debut against Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup in 2018.

This was followed by a further 15 games for his boyhood club in between heading out on loan to Stevenage and Ross County, for whom he would take in just south of 50 appearances.

Upon his return to St Andrew's in the summer of 2021, he completed a permanent move away to another corner of the Midlands, joining Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s Burton.

It is with his parent club that he enjoyed his most sustained run of games before another loan followed with Doncaster Rovers.

Now Charlie is aiming to settle in quickly after completing his move to the Cherry Red Records Stadium this morning: “I’m over the moon to be here, I can’t wait to get going! I had a good first session this morning with the boys. I’ve had a very warm welcome from the staff and the lads – I’m excited for what’s ahead.

“I’m here to show my strengths and contribute as much as I can to the team. I’m coming into a good team that’s looking to score goals. I love to get on the ball and create so the style suits me. There’s a lot of good players here but I’m confident in my abilities to prove myself. I want to get in the starting eleven and stay in there.”

Johnnie Jackson also had his say as we added further depth to our midfield options: “Charlie’s an experienced midfield player, he’s played a lot at our level. He comes with a really good pedigree. He’s a fit boy, he can run all day, he’s got bundles of energy, I really think he’ll fit into our style and the way we want to go about things.

“As with most of the signings this summer, the enthusiasm and the appetite from the lad when I spoke to him about coming here was infectious. He wants to be a part of what we’re doing and has seen how we’ve started the season. In recent games we’ve found ourselves a bit light in that position, so he’s here to help us.”
