International glory for Ali and Iraq

Striker lifts silverware overseas

11 September 2023

Ali Al-Hamadi topped off a successful King’s Cup campaign in style with the Iraq national team on Sunday as he won the second trophy of his career.

Heading into the final fresh off the back of notching his first international goal in the win over India, Ali was named on the bench for the showpiece game that was hosted at the 700th Anniversary Stadium in Chiang Mai.

Despite not being introduced in the match itself, our striker was able to claim a treasured medal as his side prevailed on penalties (5-4) after drawing 2-2 with the hosts, Thailand. Ali is pictured celebrating above with teammate Zidane Iqbal.

It is the first time that Iraq have won the tournament that this year celebrated its 49th anniversary. Ali will now be looking to carry his form for the national team into League Two as he makes the journey back to England to link back up with our squad.

Everyone at AFC Wimbledon would like to congratulate Ali and the Iraq national team on their deserved success.
