Super Sunday with Morgan and Haydon!

Club presence at key community event

22 September 2023

It's a landmark event for sport in Merton - and we'll be at the very heart of it on Sunday!

Dons midfielder Morgan Williams will be joining in with fun activities hosted by our AFC Wimbledon Foundation - and Haydon the Womble is sure to be another star attraction.

The event is called 'Merton's Big Sports Day' - oragnised by Merton Council to showcase a wide range of activities with the aim of becoming London’s Borough of Sport.

Hosted at Canons House and Grounds, Mitcham (CR4 4HD), from 10 am until 4 pm, the event will bring together clubs and coaches from around Merton. We’ll be joined by members of the All England Tennis Club, who will be putting on free coaching sessions, along with Mitcham Cricket Club, Merton Saints BMX Club, and other local organisations.

The overall aim is to create more low cost and free opportunities for residents to get active, by celebrating the area’s sporting heritage and by investing into our sporting infrastructure to ensure opportunity for all.

Speaking ahead of the event, Morgan said: "Hopefully we can provide some real opportunities and insight into what it’s like to be a professional footballer, and provide excitement and enjoyment through our activities, so that people fall in love with the game from an early age.

“I think Merton becoming London’s Borough of Sport would be such an amazing thing. There’s so much talent in this area that is yet to be found. There’s so many people that just need that opportunity to find out what they’re best suited for.

“AFC Wimbledon has a massive place in my heart as it’s the only club I’ve ever played for after joining at the age of five. Being scouted in a park in Wimbledon obviously makes it that more special. We’re a club that works so hard in the community – the Dons Local Action Group does so much hard work in providing for the less fortunate. The tireless hours that people spend trying to make the community a better place is what makes this place such a special club."

It’s a free event for all the family, so make sure you join us on Sunday.

As well as AFC Wimbledon Foundation coaches coordinating fun challenges, including penalty shoot-outs, we'll have a Club Shop presence and more, so please come along and spread the word about the Dons!
