Omar: “We’re trying to build something here”

Lebanese international forward sheds some light on his plans

7 April 2024

Omar Bugiel looked to the future after notching his eleventh goal in his first season with us.

His second-half header from a Kofi Balmer long throw into the box was the standout moment in a scrappy, but vital 1-0 win against Salford City, as we kept alive end of season play-off hopes.

As well as possibly extending our season, Omar spoke positively about perhaps lengthening his stay at Plough Lane.

“I’m having chats with the club,” said Omar. “There are good conversations that are going on at the moment, so I’m looking forward to the outcome.”

You can listen to everything Omar had to say below.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen yet, but if I am part of the team next year, we definitely want to be strong at home, keeping those clean sheets and with our strikers scoring goals going forward.

“I said from the start, when I came here, about signing for this massive club - that I wanted to be a part of it. I’m an honest player and I’m still giving everything for this club.

“It’s a big club. The people here understand what the situation is - that we’re trying to build something. I want to give a massive shout out to the fans, home and away, because we really appreciate them.

“Personally, it’s been very enjoyable this year. Myself, having eleven goals now, a couple of assists, and even winning a few pens - I’m enjoying my football. So, this season has definitely been up there for me.”

Right now, though, Omar’s immediate focus is on adding three more victories from our remaining games, away to Swindon and Tranmere and home to Walsall, to give us a chance of a play-off semi-final.

Omar said: “The gaffer said before the game that we’ve got four cup finals to go, and you just never know what can happen. It takes one chance to win a game and even though it wasn’t one of the prettiest ones, they all count.

“It’s three games to go now and if others slip up - we get a chance. We’ve had opportunities to win games over the course of a league season, but it is what it is - you never know what could happen still.”

Having reached a combined half century of appearances for club and country this campaign, Omar feels he still has plenty in the tank after a gruelling season - including having returned from World Cup qualifiers in Australia recently.

“I still feel the jet lag a little bit,” admitted Omar. “My body is still recovering, because of obviously the flights and playing two games out there against a very good side.

“It’s tough, but I had to come back and be available for the manager. That’s what I’ve been doing - putting a shift in and trying to go to the end.

“At least Swindon is nice and local, but I think they’re still going to make me stay over in a hotel! It’ll be nice to play somewhat locally and for once, have my mates come over and watch a game and hopefully get another result.”
