Johnnie: Our response will be key

Reaction to tonight’s defeat

13 February 2024

Johnnie Jackson believes the power of our response will be decisive after the Dons fell to a 2-0 defeat at Accrington Stanley.

Two moments of quality from the hosts’ Jack Nolan and Ben Woods decided the game in the second-half on a night when we had presentable chances of our own.

Kofi Balmer saw a header well saved whilst substitute Harry Pell also had a late opening that could have altered the outcome.

Here Johnnie reflects on what could’ve been and looks ahead to two successive home games against Morecambe and Crawley Town.

ON THE PERFORMANCE…

There was very little in the game. Did we do enough to win it? Certainly not but the two goals from them were unbelievable strikes. They’ve proven to be the difference, those two moments of quality. We’ve had two clear cut chances that we haven’t taken.

We didn’t give up, we kept trying. That first goal gave them something to hang onto. We put them under pressure, created some moments – Kofi’s header from the set play springs to mind. We could have easily been back in the game but we didn’t grasp the opportunities in those moments.

They then scored another unbelievable goal and that meant we were really chasing the game. We didn’t have the quality to get the win in the end.

ON THE SUBSTUTITIONS…

We wanted to freshen it up and we did go on to cause them problems after those changes were made. We didn’t have enough variety in our play tonight. We could have passed it better in the second-half but when you have aerial threats like Omar and Pelly, they’re weapons too.

ON THE RACE FOR THE PLAY-OFFS…

I’ve reminded the lads of how important it is to respond again. We’re a point outside the play-offs and we’re right in the mix. There’s everything to play for. Tonight is disappointing, it’s another punch on the nose but this team has shown it can respond this season.

Given the form we’ve been in at home, we’ve now got a big opportunity. We’ve got a long trip back but next time in training they need to bounce through the door and know that we have a big game on Saturday.
