Johnnie: We must follow this with a win

Reaction to today’s draw

17 February 2024

Johnnie Jackson was frustrated to not pick up all three points today but feels this has the potential to be a good week if we can go one better on Tuesday.

Omar Bugiel’s opener was well worked and capped off what was a dominant first 60 or so minutes for the Dons.

However Morecambe were clinical when their chance came with Chris Stokes bundling home from close range, earning the visitors a point that came largely against the run of play.

Here Johnnie reflects on what could’ve been, discusses our response after Tuesday and highlights the performance of Omar Bugiel.

ON THE PERFORMANCE…

It’s a game we should’ve won as for the most part we were in total control, especially after we scored, there was a period where we should’ve taken the game away from them.

We didn’t get the second and we knew they were going to have a moment. We haven’t defended well enough and they’ve got a goal out of nothing. It’s cost us because the performance was really good.

They’re a good team, Morecambe, to dominate them the way we did was pleasing but that’s what they do, they stay in games. They got their goal and saw it through, they were happy with their point.

We’ve actually climbed the league, believe it or not! It shows just how tight it is. We’re right amongst it and now we have to back it up on Tuesday. If we can back it up and get what we need it becomes a really good week. All focus is on our recovery and getting something then.

ON RESPONDING WELL AFTER TUESDAY…

This group knows how to respond. Our levels didn’t drop hugely on Tuesday night, we lost it to two brilliant goals. We played really well today, our pressing in the first-half was excellent, we won the ball back in good areas and didn’t quite get the openings.

We started the second-half right, got the goal and then I’m thinking we’re going to go on and win it because we had all the momentum. This is the first time we’ve dropped points from a leading position since September.

ON OMAR BUGIEL…

They’re (Omar and Josh Kelly) looking really good together. Omar is such an important player for us. I’m delighted he’s stayed between the sticks like I’ve been asking him. It was a good goal. He’s such a threat in those positions. We know he can come in and link the play like a 10 but when the balls wide we want him to be a nine between the posts.
