Nick provides inspiration at exciting relaunch event

AFC Wimbledon Business Club is back

2 February 2024

The AFC Wimbledon Business Club returned with great feedback from those in attendance yesterday after inspirational words from one of our own!

Nick Robertson, AFC Wimbledon PLC Board Member, joined host Aaron Paul on stage for an exciting relaunch event to chat about his involvement with ASOS, a company he co-founded in 2000 and helped to transition from humble beginnings into a multi-million pound business.

Nick provided an insight into the challenges his company faced since launching 24 years ago, starting out by selling imitations of clothing worn by superstars on television – hence the name ASOS (AsSeenOnScreen).

Rumz Habib, Director of New Business & Acquisitions at Chesterfield Gordon, an Estate Agents based in Battersea, said: “Starting up a new business is not an easy thing to do. It was therefore great to hear from Nick, who spoke about spotting gaps in the market to transform his company into a multi-million pound business.

“I’ve always had a bit of passion for the Club and I met Alex Glaister (Business Development Executive at AFC Wimbledon) at a breakfast meeting for Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce. He invited us to this event, and I’m keen to hear more as I’m really interested in getting involved with the Club.”

Jessica Barwell, Marketing Communications Manager at Home Grown, a membership club in Marylebone for entrepreneurs, added: “It was a really interesting discussion with Nick – Aaron hosted it brilliantly. Nick spoke honestly about growing a business, and the challenges he faced, but it also sounded like a lot of fun.

“It can be quite lonely as a business owner, so having that opportunity to bounce ideas off other people and get some help when you might be facing a big challenge is invaluable. Meetings like these can provide a network to help businesses to grow.”

Held in the Viticult Lounge at our stadium, people from local businesses heard more about how Nick and his team spotted gaps in the market to make ASOS a massive success. But that was far from the end of the relaunch event, with a chance to network, before a stadium tour rounded off proceedings.
