Johnnie: Discipline and desire got us the win

Reaction from Meadow Lane

9 March 2024

Johnnie Jackson saluted the application of his players as the Dons picked up a vital away win on Saturday afternoon.

An own goal and a first senior strike in English football for Kofi Balmer saw Wimbledon come out on top in what was a tight game, closing the gap on the Sky Bet League Two play-off places to one point.

In what was our third clean sheet on the bounce, our team’s resoluteness stood out as we stood tall against everything thrown at us to grind out the three points.

Here Johnnie discusses the manner of our victory, speaks about the importance of set pieces and salutes our travelling supporters.

ON THE PERFORMANCE…

It was a brilliant win, a really good away performance. The lads showed great discipline and desire to get the job done. Our game plan worked well. We looked a real threat when we had our chances from set pieces and counterattacks.

ON OUR SET PIECES…

The work we put into them is really important. We put a lot on them this week because I felt like we hadn’t scored from a corner or from a set piece situation in a while. With there only being 10 games to go, there’s going to be a lot of tight matches. Sometimes the set pieces make the difference, they can decide those games.

The first one came off the back of Kofi’s throw – I think JJ (John-Joe O’Toole) is trying to claim that one! He can have it! And then Kofi has been really aggressive to score his header from the corner. We put in a good delivery and gave our players the chance to really attack it.

ON A THIRD CLEAN SHEET IN A ROW…

Defensively we were outstanding. I always speak about our shape, which starts from our front players, the defenders will get the plaudits but it’s a team effort. The centre-backs were brilliant, our goalkeeper and Josh Neufville, who made a goal saving tackle.

Once they did get in behind and put balls in our box, we dealt with it really well. We defended our box superbly.

ON OUR TRAVELLING FANS…

There were some great scenes at the end. I think they could sense that we were going to have our moments. They could see that the lads were giving absolutely everything. They got behind the boys, so it was great to go over and celebrate and send them home happy.
