Johnnie: We had enough to get something

Reaction to today’s defeat

16 March 2024

Johnnie Jackson was left ruing our lack of final quality as the Dons lost out 2-0 to Newport County.

It may have been the away side who came away with three points, but Wimbledon certainly had chances of their own to change the outcome.

Substitute Josh Kelly saw a looping effort hit the crossbar, whilst he also fired just off target – it just felt like one of those days for our side.

Here Johnnie provides his thoughts on the performance, discusses a key first-half decision and looks ahead to next weekend.

ON THE PERFORMANCE…

We had a lot of play in their final third. A lot of penalty box entries, a lot of crosses and a lot of shots. We’ve had enough to get something out of the game. What I will say is that for all of that we probably haven’t tested the goalkeeper enough. That final bit of quality was lacking. They defended their box well because we put them under a lot of pressure. It wasn’t our day.

ON THE FIRST-HALF INCIDENT…

John-Kymani (Gordon) has touched the ball into the area and the referee gave a free-kick for a foul. If it’s a free-kick it should be a red card. I can’t understand why it’s not been given and it changes the complexion of the game. It’s hard to swallow.

ON OUR SUBSTITUTIONS…

Josh (Kelly) was so unlucky, he hit the bar. He had another effort that’s gone only a foot wide. I thought the subs had a good impact on the game. We improved after they came on.

ON FOCUSING ON THE TASK AHEAD…

We’re seventh, with seven games to go, it’s a big opportunity. It’s a mini season. It’s a game that we could’ve come away from with something. Every team that’s in our position will have slip ups. We get another opportunity against Crewe Alexandra.
