Record attendance as AFC Wimbledon Women lift title

Kevin Foster's side round off successful season with three points

5 May 2024

A late goal from Ashlee Hincks rounded off the season with a win in front of a record crowd for AFC Wimbledon Women at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

A total of 2,686 watched the Dons defeat Actonians LFC with goals by Hannah Billingham and Hincks securing a 2-1 victory, before supporters stayed on to salute the Champions - Kevin Foster's squad presented with the FAWNL trophy.

After a cagey first 15 minutes, the first chance of the game fell to Ellie Dorey, who shot from distance, but her effort was safely gathered by the Actonians goalkeeper.

Dorey’s chance offered a platform to kick on, but the visitors survived a goalnmouth scramble, before a flurry of corners threatened to break the deadlock. Then the opener did come with Ashlee Hincks’ return ball finding Captain Billingham, who headed home to make it 1-0.

Dorey was forced off through injury and Fran Ali came on in her place, before the half-time whistle shrilled.

Kevin Foster made four changes to his team for the second-half with Faye Baker, Skye Bacon, Billie Brooks, and Sandra Soares Martins replacing Lauren Allen, Ashleigh Goddard, Hannah Mackenzie, and Brèon Grant.

The Dons had the better chances at the start of the second half, as they looked to double their advantage, but Actonians plundered a shock equaliser from a free-kick and it was a game on.

Wimbledon kept on going and Soares Martin came close to restoring the advantage with her effort just off target, before Hincks shot over the crossbar. However, there was no reprieve for the visitors near the end as Hincks fired home from the penalty spot.

It was a fitting way to end a fantastic campaign for Kevin Foster's side with that winner making it 39 goals in all competitions for Hincks. The final whistle signalled party time for all in yellow and blue as supporters stayed on to watch the trophy lift after a superb season that included 18 wins and only two defeats out of 22 league games.
