Bursik gets England call

Academy goalkeeper announced in England under-17 squad

Goalkeeper Josef Bursik has been named in the England under-17 squad announced this morning.

The squad is for the forthcoming UEFA under-17 European Championships Elite Round qualifiers.

Bursik has worked closely with experienced AFC Wimbledon goalkeeping coach Ashley Bayes and has already been to St George's Park for a training camp with the England goalkeeping programme.

“Josef is in his 1st year as a scholar having come through our system from a young age, so naturally we're all delighted for him,” said Academy Manager Jeremy Sauer.

“This year we've accelerated his development and he's played a lot of football as well as training regularly with Bayzo and the first team ‘keepers. This call-up is another excellent learning opportunity and I'm sure he'll be working hard to get the most out of it,” Jeremy added.

The young 'keeper joined the Dons at the age of nine and has worked his way through the age-groups. In more recent years, he worked with Academy goalkeeping coach Jordan Knight and former Dons number one Andy Little and with the under-16s under Michael Hamilton last season.

Bursik stepped up to Mark Robinson's under-18 side this season and helped them reach the last sixteen of the FA Youth Cup, where they went out at Preston North End in the fifth round. He has also figured in goal for the development side, under the guidance of Alan Reeves.

Everyone at the club wish Josef the best of luck with his call-up to England under-17s.
