Azeez earns Millwall win

10 February 2016

Striker shows his quality for development side

Ade Azeez staked his claim for more first-team opportunities with a well-taken winner and an impressive overall display against Millwall yesterday.

A Dons development side triumphed 1-0 in a friendly at Millwall’s training ground with coach Alan Reeves praising Azeez's performance alongside David Fitzpatrick up front.

James Shea and Callum Kennedy also featured in a squad that included Under-18s who were not in the 16 for last night’s FA Youth Cup tie.

The decisive moment came in the second-half when Louie Cockle sent over a fine cross that Azeez controlled well in the box, before finishing clinically.

Alan Reeves said: “It was a rush to arrange this fixture after our match against Gillingham on Monday was postponed. Sometimes in these circumstances it can be a pointless exercise, but that was not case here. Players got 90 minutes under their belts and we had good performances in there from the boys. Ade and ‘Fitzy’ both played very well up front and ran the channels for the team. There were not many clear-cut chances, but they both did well up there.

It was a competitive match with both teams having a go. We only travelled with 12 players due to players being required for the FA Youth Cup tie, but the Under-18s who came in did well.” “Millwall included three players who were on the bench for their first-team on Saturday, along with a couple of U-18s, but it was mostly their U-21s.

AFC Wimbledon’s development squad are scheduled to be in action next Tuesday afternoon at Leyton Orient.

AFC Wimbledon: James Shea, Callum Wilson, George Pilbeam, Ryan Sweeney, Callum Kennedy, Antonio Walker (Judah Chapman), Dan Gallagher, Christian Toonga, Judah Chapman (Louie Cockle), David Fitzpatrick, Ade Azeez.
