Captain aims to continue momentum
Captain Alan Bennett has called on everyone connected with Wimbledon to get behind the club’s pursuit of success this season with two tough away trips to come.
Two successive home victories for the Dons means that they are just a point off the play-off positions and Bennett says there’s a lot to be positive about right now.
Speaking to Rob Cornell during an interview for Dons Player, Bennett said: “There is the potential to do something good this season. If everyone who loves Wimbledon, including the fans, club staff and those working at the training ground stick together then we can push this team forward. We have away games coming up now and it will help if the fans can get behind us on the road so that we can keep this momentum moving. There are a lot of positives – I think the fans can see that – and hopefully we can go on a run now.
“The manager knew when he was recruiting in the summer that we needed to add goals to the team and we have three phenomenal strikers. Matt Tubbs has scored eight goals, Bayo Akinenwa is lighting up the place now and Ade Azeez got man of the match (against Morecambe). There is competition for places up front.
“Nobody dominates both boxes more than Bayo. He makes a massive contribution. Obviously, he makes a big difference in an attacking sense, but I was very happy with what he did at the end in our own box. Bayo got back and got in a vital header when we were under pressure and that was very important too.”
Bennett has played his part in a defence that has conceded just one goal in the last three games and the centre-back has welcomed Andy Frampton’s return to full fitness.
“I know that Andy will make a massive contribution this season so it’s great that he’s back,” added Bennett. “Andy and Adam Barrett are both brilliant lads and there will be competition for places. We’ve worked on our defence quite a lot in the last few weeks and that’s credit to all the good work put in by the coaching staff.
“It (Morecambe win) was a bit different from Tuesday night when we blitzed them. We had to hang on a bit, but it was a different type of performance and it was very pleasing that we won in that way.”
