New goalkeeper on his fine debut
Kelle Roos said that defying in-form Wimbledon striker Lyle Taylor provided great preparation for his impressive debut against Luton Town yesterday.
Only a fine strike from Luton’s Jack Marriott stopped Roos earning a clean sheet on his debut as he made a good instant impression on Wimbledon supporters with a confident display between the sticks.
And Roos told Dons Player that competition on the training pitch with the club’s 13-goal top scorer had sharpened him up during a spell of two weeks without a game since he joined Wimbledon.
“Lyle loves to score goals and I love that about him,” said Roos. “It means that when I train well he does not score and he gets frustrated! I’ve got to be honest and there will be days when he will score goals past me. For now, I am happy to make him frustrated every now when he thinks he’s got a goal and I save it. It’s good to see where each other is at and it can only help.
“When you have someone like ‘Bayzo’ around it helps you settle in very quickly. All the management staff have been great with me too since my first day and the players exactly the same. I’m enjoying every single minute of it and I think that’s a big thing when you’re a new player. You need the lads to make you feel a part of it and I am very happy with that.”
Roos has been very impressed with the talent in Wimbledon’s squad after joining on loan from Derby County and he was delighted to play his part yesterday in front of a vociferous home crowd.
“We had a good week of preparation and I think we showed we were right at it from the start,” added Roos. “The fans were very loud behind me and I enjoyed the atmosphere – I thought they were really good. I felt a lot of support from the fans from the first minute. I think it’s something that the lads earned as well. We worked hard together to get the points and that’s going to give the crowd a lift. We have to help each other as a unit and as one club.
“I have to be honest and I don’t know what the standard in League 2 is like, but I think we have got great players. We have all sorts of good players with strong attackers, quick forwards and goalscorers. We have midfielders who want the ball and do the dirty work, along with strong defenders. I think we have a lot of everything and therefore a very strong team.”
