Charity bike ride latest from our team
AFC Wimbledon’s PCUK team are certainly clocking up the miles as they gear up for their London to Amsterdam bike challenge.
At a time when the season is well and truly over for all Football League clubs apart from those competing in play-off finals, Dons kit man Robin Bedford and Marc Jones completed a London to Brighton cycle at the weekend to raise funds for the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton.
"It was a tough but enjoyable ride and probably even tougher than the London to Amsterdam event,” said Marc. “But it was nice to combine training with helping out a local charity and one that is very close to my heart. Typically, much of it was spent trying to chase ‘The Rocket’ up never-ending hills so I’m looking forward to the flatter stuff once we hit Holland in a few weeks.”

Marc, who was one of the club’s founder members back in 2002, completed the London to Amsterdam challenge last year alongside hundreds of representatives from clubs all around the country. However, this time Marc will be joined by Robin, who is a veteran of AFC Wimbledon’s Velo and Blue cycle events.
The team have been told they are sharing cabin space on the overnight ferry with representatives AFC Bournemouth. “It will be far easier congratulating that particular team than it might be some others who are on the trip”, added Marc.
Having something of a “Busman’s Holiday” is AFC Wimbledon kit man Robin, who has confirmed that the Prostate Cancer UK cycling jerseys to be worn by everyone on the second day have been delivered.
The entire 250 strong peloton, including Newport County manager Terry Butcher and Preston North End’s Simon Grayson, will be decked out in the charity’s black and blue shirts for day two of the ride. What though of the famous blue and yellow jersey, which the Dons team will be wearing with pride when they set off from Leyton Orient?
Robin has confirmed that pre-orders for the AFC Wimbledon cycling jerseys have been strong.
“We would like to thank anyone who has pre-ordered for their help raising funds on behalf of the club,” said Robin. “The shirts are currently being manufactured and we expect these to be despatched to those who have purchased them in the week commencing 15 June 2015.
Their 150-mile journey to Amsterdam starts in east London at the home of Leyton Orient on Friday 12 June and finishes in the capital of Holland the following day.
“We are really looking forward to representing the club in this challenge,” Robin added. “Prostate Cancer UK do crucial work, including providing life-saving information and treatments. As a football club, it is important we get behind charities like this that can make such a difference to some of our own supporters. Though it will be a lot of fun we have been putting in a great deal of work into training and fundraising to benefit such a great cause.”
