National Finals tilt for young Dons

AFC Wimbledon Girls U-12s have quickly mastered the art of playing Futsal after reaching the National Finals of a competition.

Managed by Debbie Francis, the girls entered the county qualifiers in April with no experience of playing Futsal, which is a fast-paced, small sided football game.

However, they marched through unbeaten with sides from Barnes Eagles, Walton Casuals, AFC Brooklands and Molesey all brushed aside.

That meant AFC Wimbledon representing Surrey in the South East Regional Finals at Surrey Sports Park last weekend – and there was even better to come.

Now competing at a higher standard, Wimbledon again remained unbeaten against the winning county teams from Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Kent, Sussex and Oxfordshire.

Debbie Francis said: "I am extremely proud of how the girls adapted so quickly to Futsal. They had never played it before the county cup competition and we entered to try something new. The results have been amazing. Two competitions down and the girls remain unbeaten. To represent the South East is something they should all be proud of. Bring on the National Finals!"

Beating off fierce competition earned Wimbledon’s victorious squad (pictured above) a chance to become national champions with the Dons going for glory at the Futsal Arena in Birmingham on 27 June.
