Midfielder on Wycombe test and his fifth season

Sammy Moore says that Wimbledon’s current squad is the best since he joined the club four years ago, but they must show the “right mentality” every week to achieve success this season.

Wimbledon’s recent progress will be tested at the home of League 2 leaders Wycombe tomorrow, a venue where Moore has fond memories after scoring in successive wins at Adams Park.

However, Moore is expecting a tougher battle this time against a Wycombe side transformed by Gareth Ainsworth.

Speaking to Dons Player, the midfielder said: “The manager has told us that they will play high tempo football and be in our faces. It’s going to be a lot tougher than in previous seasons. In the last two years I’ve managed to score there both times and it’s a nice place to go and play football. But we have to make sure we have the right mentality and win our battles all over the pitch. If we do that then there’s no reason why we cannot get three points with Bayo and Matt up front.

“We’ve played top of the league twice in recent weeks and there’s only been one winner because we’ve played to our strengths; we’ve got the ball out wide with George Francomb and Sean Rigg getting crosses into the box for our forwards.

“The teams that go up every season are consistent. We have a lot of quality in the squad, but we have to make sure that we’re on it every week. We have to play high-tempo football, win our battles, and get the service into our front two. They are a handful for any team in this league to contain.”

Now in his fifth season at AFC Wimbledon, the club’s longest serving player is determined to reward supporters for all their backing since he joined in 2010.

“It’s the best squad that I’ve been involved in throughout my career,” Moore added. “There’s been a massive jump since I first came here and it’s great to be a part of this club. The fans have been exceptional year after year and I think they are anticipating something special this season. We have a great team spirit, which every successful side needs. There’s no reason why we cannot beat any team in this league, but we have to perform every week. I’m really looking forward to the rest of this season and I think there are good times ahead.”

The full interview with Sammy Moore appeared on Dons Player yesterday, along with Neal Ardley’s update.
