Sammy: we're in peak shape

20 April 2014

Midfielder feeling fresh ahead of Plymouth

Sammy Moore says he’s far from fatigued heading into the final games of 2013/14 due to the training schedule implemented by manager Neal Ardley.

The Dons head into tomorrow’s match at Plymouth Argyle with Sammy feeling in great shape to produce his best at the end of this season and he puts that down to the fitness programme at the club.

Neal Ardley is a big believer in periodisation over the course of a season, which involves breaking a training period of up to a year into smaller periods to ensure peak fitness at a crucial stage of the campaign.

And speaking to Rob Cornell during an interview for Dons Player, Sammy says he’s certainly benefited from this approach.

“It’s been scheduled throughout the year and the way that we’re finishing matches is credit to our coaching staff. I feel sharp and if you asked any player in the squad they would say the same heading into the last three games of this season. We kept going for 90 minutes against Newport and we could have nicked it at the end. “I feel as fit as I’ve ever been since joining the club and that’s down to our training,” said Sammy.

“But in League 2 you have to win the second balls and we did not do that in the first-half. In the second-half we were excellent, but we have to make sure that we produce that level of performance for the whole 90 minutes on Monday.

“We must maintain those standards at Plymouth. It’s a nice, big pitch at Plymouth and it should suit our style of play so hopefully we can go there and get the three points.”

Neal Ardley says he will consider making changes to his starting 11 for the game against a Plymouth side currently five points above Wimbledon in the League 2 table.

“We may well freshen it up a bit,” said Neal. “You get to know the players who can take two games in four days. We will get our medical and sports science team to take a look at it. We will do our best to put a team out that will be full of the energy that we showed in the second-half against Newport.”
