Late rally not enough as our ladies extend winning run to six

Wimbledon overcome nerves to claim victory in Plate competition

9 November 2021

Our ladies made it six consecutive wins in their second game back at Plough Lane on Sunday, as they saw off a late challenge from Chesham for victory in the FAWNL Plate.

"I think we saw a bit of fatigue and tiredness after we had last Sunday off. Hopefully, we can start to build some momentum," said Manager Kevin Foster.

The Dons got off to another flying start when Player of the Match Megan Stow gave our ladies the lead, with a fine finish after only 10 minutes. They made an equally good start to the second half, when Rebecca Sargent doubled the Dons lead in the 50th minute, heading home from close range from a corner. Things got even better for the Dons when Ashlee Hincks set up Katie Stanley to make it 3-0 on the hour.

Despite going three-down, Chesham kept going and an incredible finish from long range by Gemma Fraser gave the visitors a glimmer of hope with ten minutes to go. Chesham added a second less than two minutes later, when Anneka Nuttall made it a nervy finish for the hosts. However, The Dons rallied and were able to see out the game for a close-run 3-2 victory.

"We started the game well, but we still weren't getting out of second gear," said Megan Stow. "They started coming out in the final quarter of the game and got two quick goals before the end. With our three goals though, which could have been a lot more as I had a few chances, their keeper did well. All-round we got the win and that's all that matters."

This Sunday our ladies face a trip to Millwall Lionesses, in the first round of the Vitality Women's FA Cup, kick-off 2pm.
