Bartley bags in Dons win

Single goal enough for Wimbledon

23 August 2022

Our side emerged as 1-0 victors on Tuesday afternoon as Quaine Bartley’s second-half finish proved to be enough to see off Brentford B.

The behind closed doors match offered Johnnie Jackson a chance to get a better look at some of the younger talents within our wider first-team squad with the likes of Ethan Sutcliffe, Kwaku Frimpong and Marcel Campbell all getting runouts.

Meanwhile Paul Osew, Paul Kalambayi and Nathan Broome all banked some vital minutes ahead of our upcoming League Two clash with Barrow.

Brentford started the stronger of the two sides and quickly forced Broome into action, with our goalkeeper saving well from close-range to deny Yehor Yarmoliuk.

This appeared to spur the Dons into life and in turn we created our first chance of the afternoon as the lively Osew crossed for Bartley who could only slice his effort over at the back post.

Deliveries from the wide areas were causing our West London hosts the most problems, with David Fisher seeing his delivery directed just wide by Aron Sasu.

Despite some testing moments for our defence, the scores remained level as the two sides trooped in at the break.

Sasu was then involved again during the first action of the second-half, with the striker beating two challenges before his low cross was almost converted by the onrushing Campbell.

This signified the start of a good spell for Wimbledon, with their concerted pressure and high pressing leading to the only goal of the game.

Bartley refused to give up what appeared to be a lost cause close to the touchline, leading to Brentford goalkeeper Roco Reves making an error which in turn allowed the striker to fire home into an unguarded net as he was rewarded for his efforts.

The Dons began to settle as they sought to see the game out, however Broome was once again called into action at the death as he sprang full length to prevent Alex Gilbert’s curling free-kick from finding the top corner.

In the end our side held out for a narrow victory and a deserved clean sheet to boot in what was good preparation ahead of Saturday.
