Behind Enemy Lines! Crawley Town

Our look at Saturday’s opponents

17 August 2022

The Dons are set for an away game much closer to home this weekend as we make the short trip to the Broadfield Stadium to take on Crawley Town.

Johnnie Jackson’s side will be aiming to bounce back from Tuesday’s disappointing defeat at Mansfield as Josh Davison’s brace was cancelled out by five goals from the Stags.

Here we give you the lowdown on our next opponents:

In the Dugout

Kevin Betsy was appointed as the club’s new Head Coach back in June of this year after spending the entirety of his coaching career guiding England and Arsenal’s young prospects.

The 44-year-old is best known for implementing a fluid and possession-based style of play that he has since looked to add into the mix after making the switch to West Sussex. A former midfielder, he also enjoyed playing spells with Woking, Wycombe Wanderers and Barnsley before hanging up his boots in 2015.

How have they fared so far?

Crawley began their League Two campaign in Cumbria as they were beaten 1-0 by Carlisle United at the back end of July. And the Red Devils haven’t fared much better since then, losing to Leyton Orient (1-0) and Northampton (3-2), whilst also drawing 0-0 away at Harrogate Town.

However, they did defeat Bristol Rovers 1-0 in the Carabao Cup and are now set to take on Premier League Fulham in a plum second round tie.

The Ones to Watch

George Francomb is a player that needs no introduction to those of a Wimbledon persuasion, having turned out for the Dons over 200 times between 2012 and 2018.

One of our promotion heroes from the 2015/16 season, George has taken on the captaincy at the Broadfield Stadium and is capable of operating in defence or midfield.

Dom Telford is a name that really sticks out in the Crawley squad list due to the fact that the striker finished as top scorer last season in League Two with an impressive haul of 25 goals.

This summer the Red Devils won the race for his signature and brought the frontman in on a three-year deal from Newport County – adding another chapter to a career that has seen him turn out for the likes of Blackpool, Bury and Plymouth Argyle in the past.

Tom Nichols is another experienced striker that Crawley added to their front line in 2020. The Wellington born attacker previously turned out for Exeter City and Bristol Rovers earlier in his career and boasts a goal haul of 86 to date.

He is best known for his good movement around the box and ability to provide a link between the forward line and the midfield.

Did you know?

The club holds the record for the National League’s highest ever points haul in a single season as they amassed 105 points in the 2010/11 campaign – the same season in which the Dons achieved a sensational return to the Football League only nine years after reformation.
