Nathan: I trust Bayzo with my life

Young Dons goalkeeper pushing to be first choice one day

31 August 2022

Nathan Broome continues to trust in the process under the tutelage of his coach Ashley Bayes, as he aims to make it as a number one.

The 20-year-old former Manchester City and Stoke goalkeeper was given another opportunity in our 2-1 victory at home to a youthful Aston Villa side last night. Nathan, who signed a two-and-a-half-year deal in January, spoke to us after his second competitive appearance.

“It’s hard and it’s a role that I’ve never done before, but I trust Bayzo with my life,” said Nathan following our opening group game in the Papa John’s Trophy.

“He knows what he’s doing, and he’s got a plan for me, and I’ve just got to keep turning up each day, doing what I can, and put Tans (Nik Tzanev) under pressure, but what we’ve got is good. I push him and he pushes me – that’s how it is with the keepers’ union.

“These are big games for the younger lads. It’s viewed as not being a big game, but it is. Every game matters to every player. Chris Gunter and Will Nightingale figure in every game and they’re still putting the effort in every day."

“The gaffer said he got to the quarter-finals last season with Charlton, so it’s a competition he wants to do well in and at the end of the day there’s a trophy to be won, so it’s one that we want to do well in.”

Overall, Nathan was pleased with the outcome, as we were put to the test by the Premier League 2 outfit - particularly in the first half.

“In the end, it was a great win for us. When I’ve played against them previously they were always a good team to play against. I think they’ve invested quite well and put quite a bit of money into that team.

“I thought our attitude was good. We came out well for the first 15 minutes, then maybe we got a little bit complacent, but fair play to them – it was a big game for their young players. I thought they did well, so credit to them.”
