Robins and Wombles

Interlinking with our opponents

8 December 2022

The last time the Dons faced Swindon Town, we emerged as convincing 4-1 winners at Plough Lane – and this weekend we will be hoping for another positive outcome.

Both sides are currently in pursuit of the play-off places in Sky Bet League Two, meaning that an intriguing game awaits as both teams take to the pitch at the County Ground on Saturday.

Facing each other frequently isn’t the only thing that links both clubs, with several players having donned the red of the robins and the blue of the wombles over years gone by. Here we take a look at some individuals who fall into that category.

Our current number nine, Josh Davison, enjoyed a prolific loan spell with Swindon last season, notching an impressive nine league goals in 21 games. Which in turn earnt him his summer move to the Dons as we won the race for the promising Charlton Athletic striker’s signature.

Josh has since become a key part of our first-team squad and will no doubt be relishing the chance to get one over his former side when we head back to his old stomping ground.

Staying on the subject of front men, Michael Smith previously spent some time with our side in the 2013/14 campaign, scoring nine goals in yellow and blue before being snapped up by the Robins.

A record of 21 in 65 games led to moves to Portsmouth, Bury and Rotherham – with the latter of which seeing Smith hit 52 in 188, resulting in a controversial summer move to Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

Jake Reeves is a Wimbledon legend in his own right, with the all-action midfielder providing energy in the engine room alongside Dannie Bulman during our 2015/16 promotion season. He not only dictated the tempo but also popped up with some memorable goals along the way, making him a firm favourite with our fans.

Prior to moving to Kingsmeadow for second time, Jake also had a short spell with Swindon in 2014 as he got back on track following his exit from Brentford. He has since turned out for Notts County, Bradford City and Stevenage.

Callum Kennedy began his career with the Robins before moving on to Scunthorpe United, he then had two separate spells with the Dons that sandwiched a move to Leyton Orient.

He too was part of our successful side in 2016 and has since enjoyed mixed experiences at both Billericay Town and Dorking Wanderers within the non-league circuit.
