Fitness boost ahead of Trophy game

Johnnie previews Pompey (A)

1 November 2022

Both David Fisher and Nathan Broome have made a return to full training – however tonight’s game is likely to come too soon for the former.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s trip to Fratton Park, Johnnie Jackson confirmed the good news whilst also providing his thoughts on the match itself, building on our weekend win and chances for players to grasp their opportunities.

The full transcript of what our manager had to say can be read down below as we gear up for our final group game in the Papa John’s Trophy.

REFLECTING ON SATURDAY

It was a great day. It was so up and down emotionally that by the end I was quite knackered. I went for some food with my wife and son and just relaxed like I normally would.

I’ve watched the game back, it’s important to do that and take the emotion out of it. We always debrief the team by putting something together which highlights the positives and what we can do better. We were disappointed with the goals we conceded but we want to continue to show the same spirit and determination moving forwards.

MESSAGE AHEAD OF TROPHY GAME

We’ve done some work in preparation for it. It’ll be an opportunity for players who have had limited opportunities in the league, it’s a chance for them to put a marker down. There’s also a chance for those that are coming back from injury to build minutes. It’s also possible that some young lads will get their first taste of senior football.

The message is that whatever your motivation, make sure you come away from the game without any regrets and show me why you should be involved more regularly. We recognise that we are through and with a big FA Cup game coming up at the weekend it is important that we juggle things around well.

PORTSMOUTH

We know that they need a draw to get through, so we’re expecting them to go with a strong team. It’s likely that they’ll have more experience in their side than what we have. They tend to play with a 4-4-2 and get the ball wide and make it hard to defend. Knowing Danny and Nicky Cowley like I do, they’ll be meticulously preparing to face us.

INJURY UPDATE

David Fisher is back in full training. He’s come through his rehab well and looks really strong. We’re excited to have him back but unfortunately this game will probably come a little too soon. He’s had a long lay off so we need to be smart with how we play it with him.

Alex Pearce is getting closer. Nathan Broome is also back in training, he’ll be involved tonight. He’s had a lack of game time because of the injuries he’s had, it’ll be a good test for him.
