Pearcey: Strong base is crucial

Catch-up with experienced defender

14 November 2022

Having recently returned to training, our centre-back Alex Pearce is aiming to enhance the feel-good factor that has been generated by our unbeaten run.

Our number 15 discusses how important our youthful base have been in building up our form, enjoying being a player that everyone can lean on when they need a pick me up and his relationship with former Don, Paul Robinson.

It’s a conversation which leads nicely into tomorrow night’s FA Cup replay against Weymouth as we aim to progress to the second round of the competition.

You can watch the interview on our Official YouTube Channel, whilst the full transcript is available to read down below.

BACK IN CONTENTION

It’s great to be back, it’s been a very frustrating time for me with picking up the injury, plus the added complications of the setback. Now I’m in the clear I’m fully focused on getting back up to speed and into contention for the upcoming games.

Truth be told, I try to integrate with everyone. I want to make everyone feel a part of it as that's what I liked when I was a young lad coming through the ranks. A strong relationship is always crucial within a squad, and we’re all a team and get on well with each other, which is fantastic.

YOUNG DONS STEPPING UP

The two young centre-backs are doing great and have really stepped up, especially in the last two games. To have got two clean sheets in two adds a real buzz to the team.

Ryley (Towler) coming here on loan, it’s a great experience for him. And for PK (Paul Kalambayi), he’s a bit more experienced but the game time is good for him, Jack Currie too - another young player who has been coming up, is performing really well.

All of them, have come in and helped us build a solid base at the back. That solid base is vitally important for a winning team to build momentum and become a successful squad moving forward on this run we are on.

THE ROBBO CONNECTION

Robbo was a fantastic character, and a great, whole-hearted player. When I was at Millwall, he was the under-23s coach and he was always a reliable person to lean on, and was always happy to give out advice.

I’ve come here and I’m looking to do the same. If I can do that with any player in the squad or any of the young talents coming through then I will always be here for them, because I was always grateful for the advice the older players could give when I was young.

UP FOR THE CUP

It’s very important to remember that it is one game at a time. These games are always about attitude and mentality and if we come up against a lower league side who are going to be 100% at it, then we need to be prepared for that and play with an attitude that is spot-on.

If we can’t play with that attitude and we don’t keep a good mentality, then we could be in for a very long and difficult night. At the moment, we’re not thinking about cup runs, we’re taking it slowly, remembering the one game at a time rule. That is the key essentially, if you don’t keep to that rule, it’s very easy to come unstuck.
