Behind Enemy Lines! Carlisle United

A look at Saturday’s hosts

14 September 2022

We will be looking to hit our stride again in League Two this coming weekend as we make the long trip to Cumbria to take on Carlisle United.

Following on from Tuesday’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Northampton Town, Johnnie Jackson and his players will be aiming to come back fighting at Brunton Park.

Here we give you the lowdown on our next opponents:

In the Dugout

Carlisle born Paul Simpson returned to the club that he left as manager in 2006 earlier this year and has since earnt himself a three-year deal after keeping his side in the fourth division last season.

Sandwiched between his two spells with the Cumbrians are managerial stints with Preston North End, Shrewsbury Town, Stockport County and Northwich Victoria.

How have they fared so far?

Our next opponents have won two, drawn four and lost one of their opening seven league fixtures, with their victories coming against Crawley and Gillingham.

Meanwhile they suffered defeat at the hands of Shrewsbury (3-2) in the Carabao Cup and were also put to the sword by Manchester United Under-21s (2-1) in the Papa John’s Trophy.

The Ones to Watch

Kristian Dennis (left in the picture below) currently leads the scoring charts for the Cumbrians, having netted six goals already for the side he joined on deadline day back in January.

Prior to arriving at Brunton Park, the journeyman enjoyed prolific spells with Curzon Ashton, Stockport, Macclesfield Town and Chesterfield, hitting north of 100 strikes along the way.

Tomáš Holý is widely regarded as one of the tallest players in world football, with the goalkeeper standing at six foot nine inches.

The former Gillingham and Ipswich Town man is a commanding presence in the penalty area and is well known for his kicking ability.

Owen Moxon is another player that arrived at the club this year, with the midfielder having previously plied his trade in Scotland for Queen of the South, Gretna 2008 and Annan Athletic.

The talented midfielder already has four assists to his name and has created an impressive 12 chances in seven games.

Did you know?

Carlisle’s motto, ‘be just and fear not’, is a quote from Shakespeare's 'Henry VIII'.
