Behind Enemy Lines! Leyton Orient

Our look at Saturday’s opponents

7 September 2022

It’s a return to home comforts this weekend for the Dons as we prepare to host Leyton Orient in what promises to be an intriguing London Derby.

Wimbledon will be aiming to bounce back from our 1-0 defeat at Stockport County, with Fraser Horsfall’s goal proving to be the difference between the two sides last weekend.

Here we give you the lowdown on our next opponents:

In the Dugout

Richie Wellens took over as O’s boss in March of this year, guiding the East Londoners to safety after beginning his reign with the side sat in 20th place.

A manager who prides himself on playing attacking football, the former Leicester City and Blackpool midfielder boasts a sound record as a coach, having won silverware with both Swindon Town and Salford City during the 2019/20 campaign.

How have they fared so far?

Orient have had a near perfect start to their league season, having won all but one of their opening seven fixtures, which in turn sees them lead the early standings in the table.

Things have not gone as well in the cup competitions with Forest Green Rovers (2-0) and Oxford United (5-0) inflicting tough defeats in the Carabao Cup and Papa John’s Trophy respectively.

The Ones to Watch

Charlie Kelman is a talented forward player who was acquired on loan from Queens Park Rangers over the summer and has since hit the ground running, scoring three goals and assisting a further two.

The USA youth international previously enjoyed a fruitful spell with Southend United before moving to Loftus Road in 2020. He has since spent time on loan with Gillingham.

George Moncur is a name that will be familiar to Wimbledon fans, with the midfielder having turned out for us back in 2012 whilst he was on the books of his then parent club, West Ham United.

A traditional box-to-box player, Moncur is capable of scoring a wide variety of goals and dictating the tempo of games from within his own half and the opposition’s.

Dan Happe is a powerful centre-back who has progressed through the O’s academy and since gone on to play way over 100 games at senior level.

Along the way he has won the National League at The Breyer Group Stadium, whilst also being awarded the club’s Young Player of the Year for his performances.

Did you know?

The East London side reverted back to being known as Leyton Orient in 1987 after a supporters’ campaign took place to push for its reinstatement.
