Cobblers in Focus

A look at our next opponents

11 September 2022

The Dons will be aiming to return to winning ways in the league this coming Tuesday as we play host to Northampton Town.

After a period of over a week without a game, we will be looking to start quickly on home turf against one of the league’s early pace-setters.

Here we give you the lowdown on our next opponents:

In the Dugout

Jon Brady was appointed as permanent manager of the Cobblers in May 2021 after seeing his side relegated back to the fourth division as caretaker following the departure of ex-Wimbledon player Keith Curle.

Prior to taking the top job at Sixfields, he held coaching roles within their academy set-up at Under-16 and Under-18 level, whilst also managing Brackley Town over a period of six years.

How have they fared so far?

Northampton have started their second successive League Two season well, winning four, drawing two and losing one of their first seven games.

They haven’t done quite as well in the cups however, with Wycombe Wanderers (2-1) and Ipswich Town (6-0) defeating them in the Carabao Cup and Papa John’s Trophy.

The Ones to Watch

Mitch Pinnock is a skillful attacking midfielder that previously racked up just north of 70 appearances for the Dons as he helped us to stave off the threat of relegation under Wally Downes.

Since leaving the club he has gone on to become a key player for the Cobblers – following a stint with Kilmarnock – recording eight goals and 14 assists last term as their campaign ended in play-off heartbreak.

Sam Hoskins is arguably the biggest threat to our side, having scored an impressive eight goals already this season from a position on the left-hand side.

Also capable of operating in a variety of central attacking positions, the forward has become a real fans’ favourite because of his hard-working displays over the course of his 303 games for the club.

Danny Hylton is another player that was once on our books and the striker has since gone on to enhance his reputation as a proven goalscorer at Football League level.

During his earlier years he fired in 41 goals for Aldershot Town whilst in more recent times he has enjoyed prolific spells with Oxford United and Luton prior to completing a move to Northampton this summer.

Did you know?

The club’s nickname, Cobblers, is a reference to the town's historical shoe-making industry.

We've certainly come up against Northampton Town on a regular basis since promotion back to the league - on 17 occasions in fact.

However, this time around will be our first versus the Cobblers with fans in attendance at our Wimbledon home, so let's make it another memorable night at Plough Lane.
