Johnnie: We were second best

The gaffer provides his thoughts

3 September 2022

Our manager couldn’t look past the fact that he felt our side were second best this afternoon as we fell to a 1-0 defeat at Stockport County.

A headed goal from Fraser Horsfall capped a below-par first-half showing from the Dons as we spent the vast majority of the first 45 minutes on the back foot.

Although we improved somewhat in the second period, Johnnie was quick to point out that it was our start to the game which ultimately cost us on the whole.

“I thought we were second best all over the pitch to everything and that’s what’s hurt me the most about that performance,” he said. “It was way short of what I expect. We didn’t start the game well and ultimately it’s ended up costing us.

“We conceded and we were hanging on at times. It came from a set piece – people didn’t take responsibility by marking their men. It has to be a collective effort, we didn’t press well from the front and they dominated us in midfield.”

“It was down to us not doing the fundamentals of football. We lost headers, we lost all our duels and we allowed too many crosses to come into our box. We didn’t make ourselves hard enough to beat. We all have to take responsibility for that.”

Wimbledon did carve out a few half chances later in the game - however Harry Pell’s shot was well saved and our side was unfortunate to be denied what appeared to be a certain penalty as Josh Davison was dragged down.

“We got in at 1-0, addressed a few things and I felt we reacted well in the second-half, said Johnnie. “It’s a penalty. It’s as clear a penalty as you’re going to see. The referee had a great position. I just can’t understand why he’s not given it. It was disappointing but it doesn’t mask the fact that we were poor in the first-half.”
