Josh: Milestone is just the start

Popular forward on his return

26 April 2023

For Josh Davison, the final two games of the season can’t come quickly enough.

The number nine has been out of action for the Dons since his fortuitous goal against Doncaster Rovers, meaning he has missed a large chunk of the final knockings of our league season.

Now he’s keen to make up for lost time after a campaign in which he hit a personal milestone that he believes is just the start.

Watch what Josh had to say below.

“I’ve had around 40 games I think, so for me personally it’s the first time I’ve had that in my career so far,” said Josh. “I think from now I can just push on. There’s two games left for me to get a couple of goals. “I think my last game was Doncaster. I got a goal but it didn’t feel like the right way to end the season.

“You put yourself in that position, up in the stands trying to head and kick every ball. It’s frustrating. It’s been about six or seven weeks now. I’m back in and around it with the lads. I want to get back on the football pitch.

“In the first two to three weeks it was more off my feet, in the gym, just getting the strength back in my groin because I tore it. I was with Nathan, the physio, for a couple of weeks. I’ve been with Chris McConnell for a week and now I’m back. It’s been a bit of a process.

“I think I got all my rustiness out with Chris! He was chasing my touch a few times when it was just me and him. It put me in good stead for coming back with the lads. I felt sharp out there today!”

Results on the pitch haven’t gone the way anyone associated with Wimbledon has wanted, with Josh feeling no different after watching on.

However he still believes things could have been far different had we found the extra edge that’s required to see out games in League Two.

“In my honest opinion it’s not where any of us wanted to be,” he admitted. “Especially as we were on an unbeaten run up to January. We were talking about the play-offs. This is not what any of us expected or wanted. If you count all the points, the season could have been so different.

“It’s not a fact that we don’t have it because we’ve been up in games. We do have it. It’s just the mental side, we need to get that edginess about us. Hold the lead, keep what we’ve got and add to it.”
