A first round tie in the EFL Youth Alliance Cup saw AFC Wimbledon Under-18s beat Milton Keynes Dons 2-0 at home.
A dominant display from Wimbledon saw off MK for the second time already this season, with the Dons coming out as the 3-1 victors last week.
The score line of 2-0 was a tame reflection of a strong performance today which could have seen more goals converted by our side.
Despite Wimbledon’s lion-share of possession in open play, a corner would provide the first goal. A low cross driven in by Junior Nkeng was met well at the back post by captain Leo Young who dispatched well.
The Dons were allowed to continue dominating possession, moving the ball well with Harry Sidwell pivotal at the base of midfield. Continued pressure on the opposing backline saw shots from Kai Jennings and Nkeng narrowly miss the target.
A well-crafted second goal for Wimbledon came as the ball was worked through the lines, seeing Sidwell drive forward before sliding Ed Leach through on goal, who finished expertly into the top-left corner.
The half-time whistle followed with the lads comfortably in control and goalkeeper, Max Foulkes, unchallenged.
The second-half saw Sidwell, Oliver Downs and Nkeng replaced respectively by Jake Lawrence, Kelvin Kargbo and Connor Harris.
The visiting keeper was forced into action multiple times throughout the second 45 with relentless threat coming from the Wimbledon right flank, with a couple of vicious strikes from Lawrence having to be palmed away.
The Dons could have made it 3-0 as full-time approached, with a misplaced pass from the goalkeeper falling kindly to the feet of Tom Wilson who saw his lobbed shot float narrowly wide.
A strong Wimbledon performance earned us a position in the next round of the cup where we will travel to face Cheltenham Town.
