Browny taps into our underdog mentality

Dons duo prepare for big cup night at the Bridge

27 August 2023

We’re determined to channel our underdog mentality that served us so well previously, when we visit Chelsea in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

That was the message from the dressing room, after we extended our unbeaten run since the beginning of pre-season with a one-all draw at home to Forest Green Rovers.

Listen to full post-match reaction and look ahead to Wednesday night's tie with Lee Brown and James Ball below.

“We want to go there and try and win the game,” said Lee Brown who had to take on the captain’s arm band after the early loss of skipper Jake Reeves. “We want to try and get something out of it, as silly as that may sound.

“We’re professional people. We’re not there for a day out. We’ve got to go there with that type of mentality.

“It’s a great draw, for the fans, for the players and for the families - it’s a fantastic draw. There’s no getting away from that. We’re in League Two - they’re in the Premier League and a massive club. We’re all very excited, but we don’t want to embarrass ourselves.”

“The gaffer said in the dressing room that we’re going to make a game of it,” added James Ball after opening his goal scoring account for us on Saturday.

“We’re not just going to go there and accept that we’re playing against Chelsea. We want to give it a good shot and that’s what we’ll do.”

“You see it in the FA Cup, you see upsets in every competition, the underdog coming out with something when no one expects it,” said Lee. “Hopefully we can come up with a plan to do that.”

Both players gave their backing to striker Ali Al-Hamadi to find the back of the net again soon.

“He just needs a goal,” said James. “If it goes in off his knee - it doesn’t matter. The positive thing is that he’s still getting the chances. If he wasn’t, I think we’d be worried, but he still is and one will eventually go in for him.

“I feel for Ali,” said Lee. “How many times do you see it when a striker can’t buy a goal? You see it so many times - strikers really do go through tough spells. Sometimes you just need it to go in off your bum or a lucky deflection and that’s what he needs. Then, they come like buses. He knows that and it will change."

Lee is also enjoying linking up again with goalkeeper Alex Bass at the other end of the pitch and sponsor’s man of the match Isaac Ogundere.

“I played with Alex at Portsmouth,” said Lee. “He’s a really good keeper, he was playing regularly there, behind the back four. I’ve always rated him and he’s got a calm, very mature head on him and he never gets too high or too low.

“From the very first day we came back, Isaac had a real hunger about him, really fit and the fittest I’ve ever seen him. He’s started the campaign really well, but it's still early days and let’s not get too carried away.

“He’s had a fantastic start, but football can change very quickly and you’ve got to keep being honest with people.”
