John and Robbo sum up feel good factor

Duo interviewed on Club show

15 August 2023

John Green and Mark Robinson both appeared on Dons TV at the weekend as the duo talked all things Wimbledon on their return to the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

John has been involved with the Club for several years after first becoming captured by our unique history and story. The American author and vlogger has sponsored us for many years and continues to come to games as a fan when time allows.

On Saturday he gave us his views on the 2023/24 season so far after jetting in for our game against Wrexham – a club owned by his good friend Ryan Reynolds.

Watch the full interview with John below.

“I’m inherently optimistic. I believe every year that we’re going to win the league,” joked John. “I felt the game against Grimsby was really encouraging. I’m seeing a team that plays with a real identity.

“Ali Al-Hamadi is an exceptional player, I also enjoyed seeing Ryan McLean score an absolute banger of a goal. This is the Wimbledon I fell in love with.

“I love the line ‘we don’t buy stars, we make them’. We've made great signings. Jake Reeves is great to have back and I’m excited about Joe Lewis.”

Mark, more commonly known as ‘Robbo’ to our supporters worked for the Dons in various roles after joining back in 2004. After excelling within our Academy set-up he stepped up to become our permanent first-team manager in 2021. He is responsible for developing several young players for the Club and is still held in high regard by our fans.

Robbo comes to Plough Lane when he can and was in attendance last week as we dramatically overcame Coventry City in the Carabao Cup.

“I really enjoyed the Coventry game. It was great to see us win and to see the fans enjoying themselves,” he said. “I only live 15 minutes up the road, so it was great to see the supporters smiling on the way back from the game.

“We’ve got a lot of pace up top which is really important. It was also great to see Jake Reeves come back, he’s someone I wanted when I was here. I know he’ll be great around the players because he’s really good culturally. I loved him when he was with us before. I get a buzz coming here.”

Now with Chelsea as head coach of the development squad, he also admitted that it would be strange to see us visit Stamford Bridge later this month, whilst also reflecting on the high times of his time in charge.

“I always think back to the Bolton game as it was the first game with a crowd here. I would’ve loved us to have nicked the win but I think it was a great game of football. The win over Oxford was probably as high as it got for me. It was us at our best. #

“One of the real positives from the time was the progression of young players like Jack (Rudoni) and Ayoub (Assal) – they’ve gone on to make us money for the football club.

“It’s going well (the job at Chelsea), we had a really good year last year, we went five months unbeaten. There’s also been a lot of progression of players into the first-team. I sit behind the dugout at Stamford Bridge for first-team games, so it will be bizarre to look across at Rob (Tuvey) and the others.”
