5 January 2023

AFC Wimbledon will be aiming to get back to winning ways this weekend as we travel to the Mornflake Stadium to take on Crewe Alexandra.

The Cheshire outfit will also be keen to build up some renewed momentum after beating Tranmere Rovers 1-0 in their last home outing.

Here we give you the lowdown on what to expect:

THE GAFFER

Lee Bell has been part of the furniture for quite some time at Crewe, initially working under both David Artell and Alex Morris, before switching positions within the coaching staff with the latter in order to become permanent boss in December.

He has since overseen a run of three defeats and one victory so far, meaning that he will be hoping for an upturn in form as 2023 progresses.

THE SQUAD

Courtney Baker-Richardson and former Wimbledon academy product Dan Agyei lead the way in terms of goals, whilst Tariq Uwakwe and Callum Ainley provide plenty of creativity in midfield.

Another ex-Don in the form of Rod McDonald marshals the backline well, with the centre-back being named in the Team of the Week recently.

HE PLAYED FOR BOTH

Terell Thomas is our former Player of the Year and previously took in a short-lived spell with the Railwaymen during the 2021/22 season.

A powerful defender, he made a total of 90 appearances in yellow and blue and has since gone on to play for Reading and Charlton Athletic.

WE’VE MET BEFORE

We last faced Crewe back in October, with Ayoub Assal’s goal on the stroke of half-time being cancelled out by Rio Adebisi's header. Arthur Okonkwo also saved a late penalty from Josh Davison.

The two sides previously played out an entertaining 3-3 draw at Gresty Road in February 2012 as Sammy Moore and Christian Jolley both netted late to rescue us a point.

FORM GUIDE

Our hosts currently sit in 17th place at the time of writing, having won seven, drawn seven and lost eight of their opening 22 league games.

Barnsley and Grimsby Town knocked them out of the FA and Carabao Cups respectively, whilst they also exited the Papa John’s Trophy at the group stage.
