Johnnie: A good indication of our progress

Post-match reaction to today’s 0-0 draw

14 January 2023

Johnnie Jackson displayed a mixture of frustration and positivity following our game with Bradford City, but made it clear that we are moving in the right direction.

Jamie Walker was shown two yellow cards, meaning the Bantams were reduced to 10 men for the final 30 minutes of the contest but alas the Dons couldn’t quite find the breakthrough required to turn one point into three.

Nevertheless it was another solid performance as we continue to stay in touch with the top seven in Sky Bet League Two.

“We had an opportunity to win it when they went down to 10 men,” said Johnnie. “We did everything but score. It just didn’t quite fall for us today. Their keeper pulled off some great saves including the one from Ethan’s free-kick. We just couldn’t find our final pass. It can be like that on given days but to be fair to them they defended well.

“We were up against a really good team, got a point and a clean sheet. We’ve gone toe-to-toe with them twice and have arguably deserved to win both games. It’s a good indication of where we’re at as a team.”

Our manager also had the luxury of numerous attacking options, despite the absence of several players through a combination of injury and illness.

All three of our January signings featured this afternoon, with Johnnie keen to praise their effect on the game.

“It was another solid defensive performance,” he said. “We’re not conceding many as a team. It’s nice to be able to change system and personnel and still come out with the same outcome. I’m confident that we’ll look solid no matter what formation we play.

“We’re able to make changes from the bench that can impact the game. Sam was really bright, he’s only been with us a week now and he’s already understanding what we want from him. He’ll get better and better. The squad has been well energized by the incomings that we’ve had in Ali (Al-Hamadi) and Armani (Little). It’s a credit to everyone that’s working on the transfer side of things.

“Nathan Young-Coombes picked up a knock in the week, Zach Robinson has been struggling with his hamstring and Ayoub (Assal) is still missing through illness, he’s been unable to train. So it was good that we have other options available.”
