Dream match-up adds extra edge for Jack

Fans’ favourite relishing home clash

21 July 2023

Jack Currie has been Wimbledon through and through since joining us at the age of 10 – however he has admitted that this weekend’s meeting with QPR is a dream come true!

That’s because Jack is a lifelong supporter of the R’s, having held a season ticket at Loftus Road for most of his life to date after growing up idolising the likes of Adel Taarabt.

Nevertheless our full-back is focused on getting one over his boyhood heroes as our pre-season preparations continue to ramp up ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

As part of an in-depth catch-up Jack outlined how much he has learnt after last season, discussed his relationship with our coaching staff and the importance of the whole Club coming together.

Watch the full interview below.

HOW WAS YOUR SUMMER AND HOW HAVE YOU FOUND PRE-SEASON?

My summer was lovely! Pre-season has made me get back on the horse pretty promptly. It was always going to be tough – the trip to Spain was brilliant, a great experience that was finished up with a great result at the end to top it all off.

LAST SEASON WAS A BIG ONE FOR YOU. WHAT’S THE MAIN THING YOU LEARNT?

I learn that anything can happen in this league. Last season was a massive learning curve for me. Possibly everything that could have happened in that year happened. I’ve had the highs and I’ve had the lows. It’s now about maintaining and pushing forwards.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THE INCREASED ATTENTION ON YOURSELF?

At the end of the day they’re appreciating my work. I’m really grateful for that and the fact that I’m able to showcase it a bit more is something I’m really looking forward to. It excites me!

WHAT’S YOUR RELATIONSHIP LIKE WITH JOHNNIE JACKSON AND TERRY SKIVERTON?

It’s brilliant. The gaffer gave me my chance and for that I’m forever grateful. He’s given me the platform to be where I am now.

Skivo goes into the finer details – they both do, they both push me to where I want to get to. They’re really invested in you individually as players. If you’re doing something wrong, they’ll be the first to tell you.

HOW DO YOU FEEL YOU’VE IMPROVED AS A PLAYER?

My game knowledge has definitely improved. Being in different squads with different players is always a good learning curve. Having experiences such as playing under floodlights on a Tuesday night when it’s cold and wet help you to learn!

I feel like I’ve not really touched the surface of what I can learn. That gives me confidence moving forwards.

WE RECENTLY HAD A MEETING BETWEEN ALL CLUB STAFF AND THE PLAYERS. HOW BENEFICIAL WAS THAT FOR YOU?

The great part about it was that it was concise and it told us exactly what we needed to know for the season ahead. Learning about each individual’s part in the football club is brilliant because I’ve been here half my life - it’s something that I’m proud of and I’m glad that it’s expanding and getting bigger and bigger, day by day.

WHAT DO YOU TEND TO TELL NEW SIGNINGS ABOUT THE CLUB?

I give them little snippets. There’s only so much you can give them, a lot of it is for them to learn. Everyone that has come in has been brilliant, they take on information really well. It’s helped us massively as a team to come together.

HAS IT HELPED TO HAVE NINE NEW SIGNINGS JOIN SO QUICKLY?

Every single signing has been great so far. They’ve been in the game, they’re all experienced and I think that’s what we really need in order to kick on this year.

THERE’S A STRONG RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN YOU AND THE WIMBLEDON FANS. HOW EXCITED ARE YOU TO BE BACK PLAYING AT THE CHERRY RED RECORDS STADIUM IN FRONT OF THEM?

It’s what you dream of isn’t it? Playing against the club you support for the team that you’ve been at half your life, it gives you that extra motivation. A first game back at home in the new kit. The main thing is that we give them something to cheer about again.

HOW WILL IT FEEL TO FACE QPR?

I’ve supported them all my life! I went to the historic game in 2012 when Manchester City won the Premier League against QPR. A year after that I signed for Wimbledon. My allegiances are to Wimbledon for the game and I want us to do well.
