Woody: Stick with us and it will turn

Togetherness is key for our captain

Alex Woodyard is determined to meet the expectations of our fans by giving them a strong finish to our first season back in League Two.

“With the hard work we are putting in – it has to change,” said Woody, ahead of the trip to Newport County.

“For those fans that stick with us through this run of results, it’s going to feel a lot sweeter when we start getting the points on the board again. We really appreciate their support, even though it’s tough for them at the minute, so stay with us and the results will turn.

“I know a lot of players come out in these interviews at other clubs and say they do it for the fans, but genuinely, at this club, for those people who do travel away to the likes of Newport, if we do get the three points – it’s for them.

“It’s very important that we try to finish as strongly as we can, so that we go into the next campaign and kick on.”

Despite missing the start to this season due to an injury that ruled him out at the end of last season, our captain has clocked up 27 appearances this time around – and he’s eager to end this campaign on a high.

“This run of form has come at a difficult time,” said Woody. “We all knew that we were very close to the play-off zone and it just so happens that this run of form has come at this point in the season.

“There are teams all throughout the division that go through these difficult phases. I know that we’ve lost our last four games, but I’m sure on Tuesday night it’ll be our turning point to the end of the season as we look to get as many points on the board as possible.

“We’ve shown what we can do this season. We’ve gone on unbeaten runs and kept clean sheets. We probably haven’t scored as many goals as we would have liked in that period and could have turned more draws into wins, but what has changed is that we’re definitely scoring goals again.

“It’s about getting back to being that hard team to beat and being a bit more compact and going from there, but I don’t see any kind of similarities to last season as regards to falling into that negative mindset.

“It’s important that we don’t write the season off already.”
