Family link with World Champion brings love from New Zealand

Leah visited the site where her father rose to prominence

2 November 2023

It's a long way from New Zealand to SW17, but it was well worth the journey for Leah Moore as she visited the site where her father became a legend.

Leah, daughter of Ronnie Moore MBE - Wimbledon's double Speedway World Champion - was a special guest at a recent game, joined by her friend Jeff Sutton.

Of course, Speedway was hugely popular at our stadium site and WiSH (Wimbledon in Sporting History) are raising funds for a statue, which would be erected outside the Cherry Red Records Stadium to commemorate the late Ronnie and his contribution to sport in Wimbledon.

Speaking about her visit, Lea said: "I enjoyed my visit very much. I thought the heritage items and visuals softened the place, in stark contrast to a cold industrial stadium.

"Credit to WiSH and all those who have worked on it. In addition, the local food outlets you could get food from were a nice addition to the matchday experience.

"It was a great atmosphere, especially because standing is now permitted in some areas."

As part of the visit by Leah and Jeff, WiSH also welcomed Jon and Chris ('Maddog') Pullen. They were involved in the 'Farewell to Wimbledon Stadium' event, held in collaboration with the stockcars, to say goodbye to the old venue.

You can make a donation to the fundraising for a statue in tribute to Ronnie Moore outside the stadium by clicking on the link below.
