New addition to the stadium walls reflects proud history

Update from Wimbledon in Sporting History

There’s been another addition recently to the impressive illustrations of Wimbledon’s unique history on the Cappagh Stand concourse, so it’s well worth taking a look for yourself at Saturday’s game!

“The Greatest Team” painting now adorns the walls at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, and you can see it on the right as soon as you pass through the turnstiles for the Cappagh Stand.

Reflecting different eras in our history, it adds to a section at our ground that sums up what the Club is all about – particularly important to spread the word to first-time visitors.

John Lynch, Managing Director at WiSH (Wimbledon in Sporting History), said: “The original painting represents players in kits throughout our whole existence. It starts with the old Plough Lane dressing room on the left, before morphing into the current one in our new stadium, back home after three decades away.

“Of course, our Womble mascots Wandle and Haydon are included, and if you look closely there are several less obvious nods to our heritage. The image will be enlarged and installed at strategic points around the stadium, ensuring that it's accessible to all.”

The quality of the painting is certainly no surprise as WiSH commissioned legendary sports artist Andy Kitson - well known across motor racing and private commissions for Formula One racers - to put together his first football offering.

All at WiSH and the Club are grateful to Andy, who has given us 100 per cent copyright to aid us with continuing historical initiatives - funds raised going towards an online museum offering and a library containing images from every year of our incredible story.

The concept of the painting was to create a dressing room scene representing Wimbledon football's whole history from 1889 to the present day – and so The Greatest Team design was created.

And there’s an added bonus for supporters as you can get your hands on this slice of history in time for Christmas!

A range of posters, greeting cards, and postcards have been produced along with a bespoke jigsaw puzzle (which will be delivered in time for Christmas).

These are available via the WiSH website by clicking on the link below, with all profits ring-fenced for future heritage developments.
