From Wimbledon to West Yorkshire

They played for both

10 October 2023

As we look ahead to the visit of Bradford City this weekend, we’ve picked out a cluster of players who have turned out for the Dons and the Bantams over the years.

Featuring two of our current squad and legends of both clubs, there’s a bit of everything in our list. There may even be some names that have slipped your mind. Take a look through below and let us know if you can think of any others!

ALEX BASS

Our current first choice goalkeeper previously had a loan spell with the Bantams during the 2021/22 season, taking in 21 league appearances. This helped to provide Alex with the platform to get a move to Sunderland in the Championship as he signed a three-year deal with his current parent club. He has since made a strong impact already for the Dons.

DYLAN CONNOLLY

Something of a bit of a speed demon, Dylan enjoyed an extremely short lived spell with the Dons during the 2018/19 season as he formed part of the team that famously knocked out West Ham United in the FA Cup. It was during his time with us that he was loaned out to Bradford, scoring one goal along the way. He now plays his football back in his native Ireland with Bohemians.

TOM ELLIOTT

One of our 2016 promotion heroes, Tom is still highly regarded amongst Wimbledon fans for his hardworking displays up top alongside the likes of Lyle Taylor. In all he netted 19 goals in 90 games, including important strikes enroute to Wembley.

After spells with Millwall and Salford City, he turned out briefly for Bradford on loan in 2022, playing seven games but failing to find the net.

JAMES HANSON

A Bradford City legend, James scored an impressive 91 goals in 334 games during a eight-year spell at Valley Parade, helping his hometown club to play-off final success in 2013 alongside an incredible run in the EFL Cup which saw them reach the final in the same year.

After moving on to Sheffield United and Bury, Wimbledon won the race for his signature, with the target man netting some vital goals enroute to helping us avoid relegation in the 2018/19 season.

BILLY KNOTT

A pint-sized playmaker, Billy arrived at Kingsmeadow in January 2012 as something of an unknown quantity from Sunderland. He quickly caught the eye with some bright performances, which included some cracking goals, seeing him named Young Player of the Year.

After several other loan spells he found his home at Bradford, making a permanent move in 2014, which led to him playing a part in the club’s memorable 4-2 FA Cup upset against Chelsea.

DOM POLEON

His spell with Wimbledon was very short lived, lasting just a season as he plundered a respectable 13 goals. This saw the Bantams swoop in for his services in the summer of 2017, parting with an undisclosed fee to bring the Londoner to Yorkshire.

Seven goals in 37 games for Bradford was a disappointing return for a player with such talent and as such he moved on again, turning out for first Crawley Town, then Newport County and Dover Athletic. Dom has since found his shooting boots in non-league with Ebbsfleet United, netting a remarkable 59 goals in 96 games.

JAKE REEVES

Our current captain is now into his third spell as a Wimbledon player, having previously worn our colours in first 2012 on loan and between 2015 and 2017 as a permanent signing.

His all action displays in midfield have brought about memorable goals and assists, along with that memorable promotion at Wembley in 2016.

It was his fine showings for the Dons that saw Bradford make their move as they brought Jake to Valley Parade at the same time as Poleon. Unfortunately injury restricted Reevesy to just 43 league games for the Yorkshire outfit and as a result he would go on to link up with Notts County and Stevenage – enjoying a promotion to League One with the latter.

KELLY YOUGA

A player who was rarely seen in a Wimbledon shirt – playing just three games in 2013 before being released – Kelly enjoyed a long and storied career which spanned 11 clubs and three countries. One of those was the Bantams, who he joined on loan from Charlton Athletic back in 2007. After failing to set the world alight in yellow and blue six years later, he went on to play in China and France for Qingdao Hainiu and Jura Sud respectively.

CHARLIE WYKE

Now an experienced and proven goalscorer at Football League level, Charlie originally joined us as a striking novice back in 2014 on loan from Middlesbrough. He netted just two goals during his time with us before a permanent move to Carlisle United changed everything.

His 32 league goals in 77 games brought him to the attention of Bradford who invested heavily to bring him to Valley Parade on transfer deadline day in January 2017. He scored a further 29 in 56 for them before going on to show his goalscoring prowess at both Sunderland and Wigan Athletic. It was with these clubs that he won two promotions and an EFL Trophy.
