“We showed a lot of character”

Connor marks his full debut with a special strike

Opening goal scorer Connor Lemonheigh-Evans hailed the battling qualities of his teammates and was thankful for Jack Currie, who restored our lead at Walsall.

Connor made his first full appearance for us and was quick to mark the occasion with a stunning strike from outside the box after only six minutes. We came through a tricky spell after the half-time break and kicked on - further goals from Jack Currie and Ali Al-Hamadi’s first of the season wrapping up victory.

“JC was brilliant all day - especially with me on my first start,” said Connor afterwards. “He talked to me throughout the game and got around me when I was finding pockets of space.”

“For such a young player, Jack was very helpful towards me and I thought he was brilliant all afternoon.

“The boys put in a great performance, especially after the last couple of weeks when we had been in that position - leading at half-time and then conceding. We showed a lot of character today to go on and get the second and third goals. Three points and a goal – you can’t ask for much more on your first start!”

The Welshman has had to endure a stop-start time since his arrival on transfer deadline day at the start of the month. He couldn’t play in the EFL Trophy, having figured for Stockport County, or against his parent club - having joined us on loan.

“It’s been difficult since I’ve come in,” admitted Connor. “I personally got a bit of luck, as James Tilley wasn’t able to play, and the gaffer put me in. The ball dropped nicely for me for my goal and then I hit it first time and it’s gone in.

“It was nice that our Kit Manager ‘Rocket’ put ‘L-Evans’ on the back of my shirt! That’s the first time I’ve had that to be fair! I didn’t even know that was going to happen.

“I’ve really enjoyed it so far. It has been a bit stop-start, but I’ve managed to get my first game under my belt and I just want to do well, play games, score goals and create chances. I want to do well for the Club and long may it continue.”

We remain unbeaten on the road this season, having registered our third away win in the league, following earlier victories at Colchester and Sutton. Focus next Saturday returns to the Cherry Red Records Stadium and a visit from Tranmere, as we look to improve on our home form.

“It’s very important we do something about that,” said Connor. “Last weekend we were disappointed as we probably should have won against Crewe. Those are the sort of moments that we want to nip in the bud.

“When we’re leading at the break, we need to go on and win those games – especially with the fans behind us. Hopefully, after this, we go back home next weekend and put in a similar sort of performance.”
